Is anyone there?
A desperate high pitched whine crackled and creaked through the room. My eyes fluttered open, and I hear it again, that voice that causes white flashes behind my eyes.
Is anyone there?
I sit up, slowly, and try to get a grip on my surroundings. I'm in a bed, and not a comfortable one. It's more like a hospital cot and it's a foot off of the ground. There isn't anyone else in the room that could be speaking. All there is is an old computer, it looks like a Windows 95 desktop making it a century older than me. Strange to have such a thing lying around here. The screen flashes and white text appears on a black background.
Is anyone there?
This time I'm ready, and I resist the urge to flinch at such a piercing noise.
"Hello?" I call back at the ceiling, not that it's a better choice than the walls, door, or floor.
Oh, hi...
I freeze, I wasn't expecting a response. I thought it would be an automated recording, and maybe it would stop if I showed them that I was indeed awake. There are only two things in the cramped stone room, it's easy to see I'm alone from inside and out. All that's here is the computer. I walk over to it, expecting to see a primitive webcam or recorder. Instead all I see is the little white text on the screen. Oh, hi...
